Artist's Sketch Book

This is the place to find the ongoing thoughts, inspiration and works in progress of artist Beth Barlow. 4th February 2019 Looking at good news stories for the next leg of LILIWAAC. A few phrases from my research seem worthy of note: "Tza Nee Da Bee Wah" meaning "how are the connections the family?" (Blackfort Tribe USA) "Ubuntu" meaning "I am because you are because I am." Thinking about inventing new customs of connections. The one from New zeland where people touch noses and exchange breaths might be a bit up close for us brits. What could go some way towards it? OSUSA from Nigeria- pot, everybody in a set community puts in what they can afford. Each month the pot is given to one individual. Next month another. 3rd January 2018 Today has been a day of trying to tie up loose ends, get meetings in place and design publicity in a way which makes sense. The Artist Behind The Artwork

Beth Barlow (BA, MA) has created socially engaged work since leaving university in 1996. Work as an education officer in a hostel for homeless young people and with an environmental charity fed into her artistic practise and led her to an MA. Here she questioned if art could be useful. Her work continues to be artistically interesting but also aims to have a wider use. Beth's mediums vary depending on the subject matter, audience and participating groups. The ideas determine the form. "Like It. Lump It. We Are All Connected" is the second major work Beth has created using yarn and craft techniques. Taken up as a hobby yarn work provided Beth with a welcome escape, a way to relax whilst still nurturing her need to produce. In 2010 she began a personal project which she called "Knit A Year". Her aim was to knit her moods for a year. As she began she saw that the idea could have a wider application. What started as a hobby became the focus of a 6 year project...

Hope and Despair In A Changing World

Can we look bad things face on and still retain our sense of hope? Are Hope and despair opposites after all? Does the news breed despair or hope? Can an artistic response to negative news give us a sense of action which lights the flame of hope? Read on for more on our Warrington and Liverpool journey into hope and despair. Just started work on the Warrington strand of the topic "Hope and despair in a changing world" . I'm looking forwards to working with mental health organisation "Creative Remedies" to explore current news stories. To help us get our teeth into the project I've create a series of chat cards which are inspired by national, global and local news. There are also a few blank cards which participants can choose to note a piece of personal news to share with the group or keep to them self as inspiration.
